Working at Fernhill

Teaching is a vocation and demands stamina, commitment and dedication.  Fernhill is a good school in which to work.  Departments are staffed by subject specialists only.  There is a comfortable working atmosphere produced by a very supportive staff team.  Involvement, respect and contribution are not dependent on seniority.  No one ‘owns’ a particular chair and there is no cynics’ corner in the staffroom.  You will not be bombarded with after-school meetings, working parties or encounter groups.

We are only interested in people who genuinely like children and enjoy working with them.  Our ethos can only be maintained by staff who respect the children and who will go the extra mile with them.  This is not the soft option, it requires firmness, understanding and consistency and the energy never to tolerate poor behaviour and under-achievement.

If you are uncertain about what you want from a teaching post then please look elsewhere.  If you are looking for the personal satisfaction sometimes missing within the profession and a real chance to develop your career, perhaps you can match our requirements.

Clive Gilbert, Headteacher

TEACHER OF ENGLISH
Recruitment Bonus Payment for the right candidate

This is one of the school’s key departments.  Curricular time is significant and exam results impact directly on the 5+ GCSE score.  Fernhill students usually do well at 16 despite literacy levels on entry being relatively low.  The subject has always been popular in the school due to the efforts made by staff to engage the pupils.  This is an opportunity for an ambitious and creative teacher to join the team and help to take the department forward in the next phase of the school’s development.

Regular departmental meetings and workshops ensure the team gets together at least weekly.  Ideas and innovations are well received and there is a willingness to trial individual preferences or alternative approaches.  The team generates its own schemes of work and contributions from all are welcomed and valued.

Essentially we are looking for the right person, and would be very happy to consider either an experienced teacher or an NQT to this post as a main scale teacher.  Our induction programme is an exemplar within Hampshire.  The time allowance is not notional, it is planned and there are regular and significant inputs from the Professional Tutor and the Deputy Headteacher.  We believe in genuine staff development and our young team provides an excellent support network for new colleagues.

TEACHER OF SCIENCE

This is one of the school’s key departments.  Curricular time is significant and exam results impact directly on the 5+ GCSE score.  The subject has always been popular in the school due to the efforts made by staff to engage the pupils.  This is an opportunity for an ambitious scientist to join the team and help take the department forward in the next phase of the school’s development.

There are six well-resourced laboratories and an ICT suite within the department.  The laboratories are in two adjacent blocks with their own prep rooms and technicians.

Regular departmental meetings and workshops ensure the team gets together and allow colleagues the opportunity to contribute to curricular and classroom planning.  Our teachers are enthusiastic scientists with a commitment to supporting each other.

Essentially we are looking for the right person, either an experienced teacher or a Newly Qualified Teacher.  For the latter we offer a quality induction programme, support within a well-organised department and a post in a successful school with a healthy age mix.
